You know how I know American Idol is some bull?

Look at the past five winners:

This is the supposed to be the best America has to offer, five average looking white guys with a guitar. Is this a pop music competition? Or a late night frat party at the University of Alabama?

I’m not saying they’re not talented, and I’m happy they won. Make that money, live your dream, etc etc. But I will say that they’re not gonna be superstars. When’s the last time you heard a white guy with a guitar on the radio? Jason Mraz? Nobody making that type of music is selling any records right now. It’s simply just not 1996 anymore. Tastes change and the music landscape changes with it.

But who is voting? If people who buy records make stars, then those same people should be able to pick stars, right? Am I the only one who thinks 14 year old white girls are running American Idol? That’s the only way I can explain the results year after year after year. After year. After one more year, because that makes five. Five in a row.

Clearly, Jessica Sanchez is a superstar. She sang just hard enough to go head to head with Ms. Holiday, but held back enough to not look crazy….like Ms. Holiday.

Middle America might have voted for Phillip Phillips, but Jessica is the one who will be selling records once all the dust settles. Remember the first time we let the middle of the country pick the American Idol, when Taylor Hicks won? And where is he now?

Actually, where are the last four winners now? I haven’t heard a peep out of any of them. But I know where the last winner is who wasn’t a white guy with a guitar: Jordin Sparks is in Whitney Houston’s last movie. Keep chugging along, Jordin. Some of us remember you, while the rest of the country keeps looking for the next Dave Matthews.
