BHM Day Eighteen: Jennifer Jackson, the first black Playmate

In 1964, Jennifer Jackson, a college student and part-time model, was working as one of only two black Bunnies at the Playboy Club in Chicago. Photographer Pompeo Posar visited the club one day, spotted Jackson, and approached her about being a Playmate of the Month in the magazine. Initially, Jackson had reservations, but Posar had caught her in a weak moment: Earlier that day she’d had a fight with her boyfriend and thought “Why not?” She had been told that to really make it big in modelling, she needed to move to NYC, and the photoshoot would give her just enough money to do that.

When the spread was published the following March, Jackson became the first black Playmate of the Month and she recieved more fan-mail than any other Playmate. She eventually left modelling to raise her three children and pursue a career in social work in the Pacific Northwest. Last year, when The Playboy Club was premiering on NBC, Jackson gave an insightful interview to the Huffington Post about her years with Playboy.

WHY DID I NOT KNOW THERE WAS A SOAP OPERA REALITY SHOW.

Who am I? Where have I been? What the fuck am I doing with my life? And basically the whole cast of Dirty Soap was on Days of Our Lives at some point. I am SO distraught.
