Because we have a Constitution with handy dandy amendments, and the first one protects free speech. You can preach the most vile, hateful things, and the government can’t stop you because it’s enshrined in our Constitution. If Fred Phelps and his merry brigand of angry inbreds choose to traipse all over the country gloating over the deaths of soldiers and innocent children because 4% of the population wants to have gay sex, then they have every right to do so. The government can’t stop them.
We already know the NYPD is one of the most corrupt law enforcement organizations in the country. Over the past few months, investigations have uncovered a ticket-fixing scandal costing the city $2million dollars, a gun-running operation, and the planting of narcotics by the police on at least two innocent people.
But this…this new discovery…it’s about as low down dirty as you can get. I wouldn’t’ve even imagined this sort of thing could happen, especially not to some well-meaning, non-violent Occupy Wall Streeters. It’s bad enough to arrest them and lock them up on the Lower East Side. But to add insult to injury…
Send anarchists and vagrants to turn the protesters against each other, wait for the violence, and then deploy police as a reaction to violence. That’s what’s happening to Occupy Wall Street. It’s a brilliant strategy in a purely tactical sense. No matter what side you’re on, you have to tip your hat to Bloomberg in recognition of this power play.
I’ve been avoiding getting Too Deep into the Occupy Wall Street movement because, to put it bluntly, I have no faith in our country. I agree with every talking point that comes out of that whole situation, but do I believe anything will change? Absolutely not.
To be fair, somebody is always getting shot in NYC. The average is right around 5 gunshot victims per day. October has been a surprisingly busy month for gun violence, up almost 30 percent from this time last year. Why?
Occupy Wall Street.
Some high-ranking cops with the NYPD explain why. The city has this thing called borough task forces. Those are the guys you see meandering about outside of high-crime areas like low-income housing and rowdy nightclubs and dangerous neighborhoods. Their presence is supposed to deter criminal activity because who’s gonna break the law with a cop across the street?
Well, those same task forces are the ones responsible for crowd control, so a lot of them are being pulled away from their regular posts and sent down to Wall Street. As a result, people are being shot.
Good idea, NYPD. Take the cops out of violent neighborhoods with repeat criminal offenders and send them to Wall Street to pepper-spray some unarmed kids with signs. I feel a lot safer walking around with the knowledge that Wall Street is full of cops standing around waiting for a protester to glance at them the wrong way.
