I live in a constant state of early 90s.
When college rock was good, and black people were still on TV.

Republican Congress hopeful doesn’t believe in the validity of marital rape.

Dick Black is a state Senator from Virginia who is now running for US Congress.  Naturally, his record in the Virginia House of Delegates is under scrutiny as well as his previous statements on various issues.  So how does Dick Black feel about marital rape?

I do not know how on earth you could validly get a conviction of a husband-wife rape, when they’re living together, sleeping in the same bed, she’s in a nightie, and so forth, there’s no injury, there’s no separation or anything.

Worse, this wasn’t a hidden camera that caught him pondering social issues among friends.  That’s a direct quote from a speech he made while in office.

Sen. Rand Paul copied the Gattaca Wikipedia page to make a speech.

If your party’s candidate is losing at the polls, and you bring in an out-of-state whackjob to fire up the extremists, you might be a Republican.

If Gattaca is your supporting argument for why your party should be elected over the opposition, you might be a Republican.

If you can’t even write a speech, but instead must copy a Wikipedia page word-for-word, you might be a Republican.

Gattaca though….of all the movies, Rand Paul chose to plagiarize the Gattaca Wikipedia page.  I guess he thought since only seventeen people saw that movie twenty years ago, no one would notice, but Rachel Maddow got your number boo-boo!  Caught!

Virginia Dems lose court battle to reverse purge of 40,000 voters.

Virginia and New Jersey are two states who have off-cycle elections and they will be electing governors in a few weeks.  In Virginia, Republican-controlled voting authorities removed nearly 40,000 voters from the registration lists in an effort to reduce voter fraud (which is, let me remind you, not a problem anywhere in this country).  The Democratic party took the issue to court with a lawsuit which includes Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli who is running for governor in this election.  The court ruled in favor of the Republican party on the grounds that the purge was perfectly legal.

So, why do I have such a bad taste in my mouth?  Oh right, because the Repugnantblican establishment is still Shady Susan and so is this voter fraud issue.

     There’s a Drive-Thru Funeral Home in Virginia.

Sometimes you just read a headline, shake your head, and go:

My people tho!  Always right on the cutting edge, riding that fine line between genius and foolywangery!

Today’s awful gun story: police sergeant cleared in “justifiable homicide” of 83-year-old woman.

Why?  Because she had a gun and she wouldn’t put it down.  Ergo, if Delma Towler hadn’t owned a gun, she would still be alive right now.

Let us not forget though, guns don’t kill people; people kill people.  In this case, cops kill people — really old people — who have guns.  But every household should own a gun, right gun lobbyists?

Republican Watch: Virginia. These people are still insane.

You know how Republicans reaaaaalllly wanted to win the last Presidential Election?  Remember how after they lost, everybody was all dang, I guess we are a lil too crazy, a lil too old, a lil too bigoted, a lil too GodThisNThat?  Have you seen all the news clips touting a softer, more moderate Republican party that should be showing up any minute now?

Well.  Not Today!  Rachel Maddow ripped Virginia a new one last week because those batshit candidates are even worse than the ones that we all hated before.

BHM Day Fourteen: John Casor, America’s first slave though civil litigation.

(Previously in black history.)

This legal document dating back to August 1670 comes from Virginia where the courts ruled that lands belonging to newly-deceased Anthony Johnson should rightfully be reverted back to England.  Johnson was of African descent, and according to English law, would always be legally an alien.  In light of his death, the lands should go to England, not his family.

Being an African in the early Americas was a tricky situation, and the relationship between Anthony Johnson and John Casor made it even moreso.
