Mini Album Review: Rosalia “El Mal Querer”

Based on her graduate thesis after studying flamenco and music production, Rosalia was inspired by a 13th century romance novel by an anonymous author.

Medieval romance plus flamenco plus modern pop/R&B production? If that’s not a hook I don’t know what else to tell you.

El Mal Querer one of the best albums of 2018 and “Pienso En Tu Mira” might end up being my favorite song this year too. I don’t know many pop songs in 6/8 (you *could* argue that it’s in ¾ which is more common, but it so clearly feels 6/8 because of the bass), but it’s a must listen and I’m shocked that it was such a huge hit in Spain because it literally sounds like nothing else on the radio. And the video is….

Rosalia is about to break out. She’s got a role in Pedro Almodovar’s next movie, she’s signed with Sony now, and she just won two Latin Grammys. Get into it.
