Black Positivity playlist.

Let’s listen to some music.

I talk about my struggles with clinical depression and anxiety because I think it’s important that we (especially Black men) have open conversations about mental health in order to normalize therapy and erase the stigma of admitting you don’t feel strong all the time. Given that, I’m not equipped to handle a constant stream of photos, videos, and updates about the protests and cops beating innocent people. Sometimes I disconnect, and sometimes I inject some levity into my online spaces because other people need to breathe too.

This is a pause from “coverage” because I love music and I made this playlist a few years ago during protests kicked off by the murder of another unarmed Black man (and I don’t even know which one specifically…because there are so many). These are songs that uplift me, bring me peace, or make me proud to be Black and feel connected to my community. I only make playlists on Spotify (Black Positivity Playlist), but you can still scroll through the songs if you use another platform, and I pulled out some of my favorites below.

Sounds of Blackness “Optimistic”

Nina Simone “Ain’t Got No”

Luther Vandross “Shine”

Twista & Faith Evans “Hope”

Aretha Franklin “A Deeper Love”

Jill Scott “Golden”

Tony! Toni! Toné! “Feels Good”

Common & John Legend “Glory”

The Clark Sisters “You Brought The Sunshine”

Black Men United “U Will Know”

Watch: JLo & Maluma “Pa’ Ti” and “Lonely”

The two most beautiful people in the world have a couple of new music videos together!

The two most beautiful people in the world have a couple of new music videos together! Please masturbate watch along with me.

A few things I did not know until this video came out:

ONE
Maluma acts I guess? Supposedly he has a movie coming out next February with Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson, depending on the COVID Movie Schedule, and he had such great chemistry with JLo they decided to record music together.

TWO
JLo has a movie coming out and she’s releasing an album at the same time. Unlike The Wedding Planner movie & J. Lo album that came out together (she’s still the only person to have a #1 movie and #1 album released at the same time), this album is the soundtrack for the movie. She’s going to have about 8 songs, Maluma will have about 3, and they’ll have a couple of duets together.

THREE
This is a pair of those duets and let me just say, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences was indeed remiss in not giving Jenny From The Block her Oscar nomination for simply existing in the world.

Watch: Whitney Houston “Saving All My Love” (1986 Grammys)

Imagine being 23 and already knowing you’re the best in the world at something. What a moment!

Published

on

The Emmy Awards were a couple of days ago and I was reminded that Whitney Houston won an actual Emmy for performing a song on the Grammy Awards that she also won a Grammy and an American Music Award for…and when will your fave EVER?!

A couple of things I just learned about this song that I feel the need to share:

  1. It’s a cover! I had no idea, but it was previously recorded as a duet in 1978 by Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. One of the songwriters, Michael Masser, heard her sing “The Greatest Love of All” and re-worked his old tune for her album.
  2. Cissy did NOT want her baby singing that song, because they were High Holy Christians and Whitney could not be out there singing about saving her goodies for a married man.
  3. It became Whitney’s first #1 single on the Hot 100, the first of seven consecutive #1 singles — a record that still stands today.

Nippy threw on somebody’s prom dress and one of Tina Turner’s old wigs and ate it up though. Imagine being 23 and already knowing you’re the best in the world at something. What a moment!

(I’m over 30 and I’m mediocre in every way, so I one thousand percent cannot relate.)

Mel C has three songs from her upcoming album on an EP and if this is the tone of the project, she is about to release the best pop album of the year. I’m not remotely exaggerating. Go listen to it.
